Pops new protégé Jessie J has revealed that she is ready to hit the big time. Speaking toThe Sunearlier this week, the singer admitted that her recent success was probably overdue, noting her work as a songwriter long before she released her own material.
She said:"Finally it's my time to shine. The critics know I've worked my absolute butt off. I've been around for years. I was signed for four years before I even gave my first song away. Some say I was a writer first, which technically I was, but I'd always wanted to do what I'm doing now. This is my dream."
She continued:"When I did those YouTube videos, I'd had a deal for ages. I just got really fed up of not having an audience so I thought, 'Right, sod it, I'm going to go straight to them'.You get a lot of people on YouTube doing covers as it's harder to break with your own music. People respected that the song was my own and I think that's what got the buzz going."
Jessie J went on to discuss her recent success at the BRIT awards, where she picked up the covetedCritics Choice Award. Coupled with topping the BBC Sound of 2011 Poll, many have viewed Jessie as a sure-fire chart hit for this year. The singer failed to disappoint when her second single, Price Tag topped the UK singles chart two weeks ago. Speaking on the success, she said:"I'm very honoured, I owe it all to my fans - my 'heartbeats' as I call them. There are not many artists nowadays who can sit there and say they've had that success from the start. I want to be a role model to young people but stay normal without letting fame go to my head."
"I'm at home catching up on my ironing before I head off to do a sound check. I want to catch up with my family for half an hour too, just to remind myself what they look like, then I'm back on the road. I'm the baby of the family. My mum, dad and sisters are amazing, we're like best mates. I'm a very family-orientated person but I can often go six weeks without seeing them."
Discussing the possibility of breaking the American market, she said:"You do have to sacrifice a lot but once you're there you can start adding the things back into your life that you once had to take out. And if I do disappear over to the States for a bit, I want people to know I'm still flying the British flag."
